50Hertz – We bring electricity from the sea to shore
50Hertz is the electricity transmission system operator for the Eastern German states, Berlin and Hamburg. In these regions, 50Hertz secures the power supply of 18 million people around the clock.
At Husum Wind, the company will be presenting its extensive expertise that it has built up over the past 15 years in the field of offshore wind energy, which it is expanding at European level together with its Belgian sister company Elia under the umbrella of the Elia Group.
In 2011, 50Hertz connected the first commercial offshore wind farm in German waters to the power grid: the Baltic 1 wind farm about 15 kilometers north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in the Baltic Sea.
Today, 50Hertz has connected a total of six offshore wind farms with a total capacity of over 1.8 GW to the extra-high-voltage grid in the German Baltic Sea. In the future, 50Hertz will be the only German transmission system operator to connect wind farms in both German seas. Two grid connection systems with power hubs in Schleswig-Holstein will then transmit green electricity from the North Sea to electricity consumers in Germany and Europe via the lines of 50Hertz. Grid connection systems are under construction and planning in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, with a capacity of around 8 GW.
50Hertz is breaking new and innovative ground in its offshore activities. In 2020, 50Hertz and Energinet commissioned the world's first hybrid interconnector. The Combined Grid Solution – Kriegers Flak (CGS) is the first power connection in which several wind farms are connected to each other. CGS serves both international electricity trading and the transport of wind power from the sea to land.
Together with Energinet, 50Hertz is now working on the realization of an even larger project based on direct current technology: Bornholm Energy Island.
For the development of the new projects, but also for the operation and maintenance of the plants at sea and on land, 50Hertz needs qualified staff. That is why we are consistently expanding our offshore areas and creating new jobs both in our headquarters in Berlin-Mitte and near the coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, as well as on the North Sea coast and in Hamburg.
In Rostock-Warnemünde, we want to put our new "Rostock Offshore Quartier" into operation in 2028, a multifunctional building ensemble with 135 permanent workplaces in modern offices, with workshops and a material warehouse directly on the quayside.
At the Husum Wind stand, visitors can experience current innovation projects and playfully take on the challenges of route planning at sea. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet experienced specialists in offshore operations and offshore projects, exchange ideas, intensify existing business relationships and explore new ones.
Visit the 50Hertz booth and be inspired by the combination of regional strength and international networking!
