Utilisation instead of curtailment in accordance with Section 13k EnWG – status quo
The new system service ‘Use instead of curtailment’ in accordance with Section 13k EnWG has been in a two-year trial phase since 1 October 2024.
The aim is to activate additional electricity consumption through targeted incentives in order to prevent expected grid bottlenecks and reduce the curtailment of renewable energies. After an initial intensive year of operation, valuable practical experience is now available. It has become clear for which types of electricity consumers this instrument is advantageous under the current framework conditions – and for which it is not. The presentation will outline the most important findings, in particular regarding the opportunities and limitations of participation for electrode boilers, heat pumps, battery storage systems and hydrogen electrolysers.
