Cavern storage facilities are essential for advancing the energy transition as they provide large-scale solutions for storing green hydrogen. Their future role in ensuring a stable energy supply irrespective of production fluctuations is widely recognized, yet energy policy lacks consequential actions.
The process, from identifying suitable geological structures to commercial utilization, is complex and requires precise planning as well as thorough risk management. Users and providers alike need to fine-tune their business models and manage expectations. Investments in long-term storage solutions are vital as hydrogen plays a significant role in the future energy markets and storage demand will pick up quickly. Therefore, the discussion about large-scale cavern storage should start today, given the lengthy development timelines involved. This presentation aims to highlight the relevance of large-scale storage and support its prioritization in order to secure the sustainability and scalability of a fully renewable energy system in future.
