GPS-Based Automated Mowing Shut-Off – Innovative Bird of Prey Protection in a Large-Scale Project

In one of the largest repowering projects in Europe (Repowering Wind Farm Elster, Saxony-Anhalt) with an installed capacity of over 100 MW, an innovative system for automated mowing shutdown is being used for the first time. (Presentation in German)

The presentation will provide insight into the successful implementation of a licence-relevant requirement for the protection of birds of prey: the system can automatically shut down wind turbines using GPS tracking when harvesting or management events occur. It therefore represents an attractive alternative to camera-based detection of agricultural machinery—an example of intelligent, technology-supported implementation of species protection measures in wind farm operations.
