Direct and green: PPAs as game changers for direct electricity and H2 supply, using thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg GmbH as an example
The presentation describes the first project in Germany to supply direct electricity from a wind farm using an onsite PPA. The aim of the next stage of expansion is to also use green electricity for the direct supply of H2 to the industrial park.
Since July of last year, the SL NaturEnergie Group has been supplying an industrial consumer directly with renewable electricity from a nearby wind farm – without having to go through the public power grid. This is based on a so-called Onsite Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), which enables long-term, predictable, and economically attractive direct supply of green electricity.
This project therefore marks a milestone in the transformation of industrial energy supply: for the first time, an industrial site in Germany is being supplied directly and physically with wind power – a model that sets new standards not only in regulatory terms, but also technically and economically. Implementation is taking place in close coordination with grid operators, authorities, and partners from industry.
The aim of the next expansion stage is to use the green electricity generated not only for the industrial park's electricity needs, but also to produce green hydrogen directly on site. This hydrogen will then also be transferred directly to industrial use at thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg GmbH. This will create an integrated, cross-sector supply concept that intelligently links the electricity and hydrogen economies.
The project is exemplary for a new generation of energy infrastructure: decentralized, renewable, resilient, and industry-compatible. It shows how innovative contract models, technical integration, and partnership-based cooperation can make the energy transition concrete and economically viable.
