The measurement of wind fields using LiDAR technology (Light Detection and Ranging) is becoming increasingly important due to the demand for wind field measurements with high temporal and spatial resolution in the lower air layers. Standard wind measurement masts (~140 m) are often too small for economic reasons and require extrapolation of the wind data. This approach includes greater uncertainties about the exact wind conditions at hub heights and beyond. The increasing hub heights (~160 m + x) and rotor diameters (>150 m + x) require reliable information about the wind profile for heights up to 200 m and beyond. Precise knowledge of the wind profile and shears is extremely important in the planning and optimization of wind farms (hub heights, shear over the rotor surface, etc.).

Wind profiles in complex and wooded terrain often do not correspond to theory. A LiDAR system such as the WindCube offers the possibility of determining the wind profile above the mast as well as additional modifications to the profile in complex terrain. The current WindCube LiDAR systems in the wind energy sector are robust, compact and can usually be transported, installed and uninstalled by one or two people. The use of a GWU-LiDAR trailer system with integrated independent power supply makes it the ideal system for field use. This makes it very interesting for short-term measurements (quicklooks), e.g. for site searches or power curve measurements of wind turbines.  The main areas of application for WindCube LiDAR systems are long-term measurements (>12 months), TR6-compliant.
