Repowering Wind Farm Elster
In central Germany, the VSB Group is repowering the Elster wind farm. With an installed capacity of 105.6 megawatts, it ranks among the largest repowering projects in Europe. Electricity generation will increase sixfold compared to the original wind farm – made possible by state-of-the-art turbine.
The new wind farm generates 235 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, supplying around 67,000 three-person households – comparable to a city the size of Heidelberg.
With an efficiency increase of almost 600 per cent, the Elster wind farm demonstrates the potential of repowering. This strategy is creating a future market, particularly in Germany and France, where many older turbines are still in operation.
VSB has managed the site for over two decades. Between autumn 2021 and autumn 2022, the original turbines were dismantled. Many components were given a second life – either as spare parts or through continued operation elsewhere. In autumn 2025, two further turbines will be added.
