Opoura bets big on solar with major investment in monitoring software

With almost 20 years of providing solutions and software to the wind energy industry, Opoura sets sail on new solar ventures with a significant investment in their OneView® software. As customers diversify portfolios, a unified solution across wind and solar is key, says CEO Thomas Bagger.

Opoura, a Denmark-based leader in energy management, has invested heavily in a major upgrade of its OneView® asset management software. Designed to support mixed-asset portfolios, the platform offers enhanced monitoring, control, analytics, and reporting across wind, solar, and hydropower plants.

The renewed focus on solar comes at a time when the PV market is gaining strong momentum. In 2024, solar made up more than 80% of all new global renewable capacity additions, according to SolarPower Europe’s annual report. And as customers expand into the solar space, their need for advanced monitoring tools and control software grows in parallel, placing new demands on software providers like Opoura. Thomas Bagger, CEO at Opoura, explains:

“Customers are no longer settling for patchy, second-rate solutions. They require reliable data and software that enable them to optimize performance in every corner of their production – and they need their systems to do so across different technologies, because this is the new reality we are looking into. Our customers are increasingly managing hybrid portfolios, and with the upgrade we have made for solar plants, they have a full-scale, advanced platform that meets the needs of hybrid power management.”

Same engine, new roads

With roots in the Nordic renewable heritage, Opoura has long been a key player in the wind energy sector. In 2011, the company launched its independent SCADA solution for wind parks, and a decade later, expanded its offering to include solar and hydropower plants.

And, according to Thomas Bagger, the many years of experience in wind is what gives Opoura its competitive edge.

“The wind energy sector is a bit like the car industry – dominated by a few well-known, proprietary brands. Solar is much more fragmented. A wide range of manufacturers and vendors are involved in building a solar park, which means the SCADA systems in use can vary significantly in both functionality and usability,” says Thomas Bagger, and continues:

“Still, the fundamentals remain the same. The engine behind it, so to speak. Whether it’s wind or solar, operators rely on accurate data and advanced analytics to keep performance on track. The real challenge lies in making sense of data from different technologies and sources. And that is where our expertise and experience lie.”

Ready to deliver more

The multi-million investment in the OneView® software follows a year marked by four strategic acquisitions for Opoura. The company has seen impressive growth in recent years, and with new, upgraded software and expanded in-house capabilities, it’s now time to reap the rewards.

“We’re already involved in some exciting projects where the strengths of our different business units really come together. The new solar software upgrade will be no exception. Our customers need more than just solid SCADA software to succeed. They need end-to-end support – from integration to commercialization – and we now have the capabilities to deliver exactly that,” says Thomas Bagger.
