Eventful start to the year for HUSUM Wind 2017

Federal Minister Brigitte Zypries to serve as patron / EEG 2017 comes into force / HUSUM Wind 2017’s partner state North-Rhine Westphalia reports positive expansion figures

13.02.2017 // HUSUM | 13 February 2017 – There were plenty of news for HUSUM Wind and the wind industry in the first weeks of 2017. Brigitte Zypries, the new Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, confirmed that she is to serve as patron of the fair, the amended EEG came into force at the beginning of the year, and the partner state North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW) just published its wind turbine expansion figures. These are good omens for the mother of all wind trade fairs, which is being held from 12 to 15 September of this year.

Brigitte Zypries is taking over as patron of the fair as successor to Sigmar Gabriel. The Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy considers HUSUM Wind to be one of the most important events in Germany's energy and environmental sector.

The amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), which came into force on 1 January, profoundly altered the prerequisites for expanding the use of renewable energy. The provisions and targets relating to land-based wind turbines in the amendment to the EEG were the subject of great debate beforehand. The new EEG poses a challenge to the wind industry, making 2017 a landmark year for the industry. "HUSUM Wind 2017 could not be taking place at a more appropriate time. A mere nine months after the EEG amendment comes into force, HUSUM Wind is the perfect platform for discussing the knowledge gained from the first bidding rounds and setting the necessary agendas for the years ahead", notes Peter Becker, Managing Director of Messe Husum & Congress (MHC). "We are delighted that such major firms as Deutsche Windtechnik AG, ENERCON GmbH and GE Wind Energy GmbH, as well as many small and innovative wind energy players and important trade associations, have confirmed their participation."

The 2016 wind energy expansion figures recently published by this year's partner state North-Rhine Westphalia are also gratifying; new wind turbines with a total capacity of over 560 megawatts were installed in the state over the last calendar year. This puts North-Rhine Westphalia in third place in the expansion stakes, behind Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. The expansion of wind energy in 2016 even exceeded that of 2002, which was to date the record year for wind energy installation in North-Rhine Westphalia. This positive development in the state has been chiefly driven by the wind expansion measures that have been pushed by the state government since 2010.
